Contaminated Herbal Product Poses Potential Risk

February 23, 2001 -- The herbal product Anso Comfort capsules have been recalled after a woman was hospitalized with life-threatening low blood sugar due to a reaction between the product and medication for diabetes and high blood pressure.  Investigation by the California Department of Health Services found that the product was contaminated with chlordiazepoxide, a prescription drug used as a sedative and to treat anxiety.  It is also known by the trade name Librium. California State Health Director Diana Bonta advised consumers to discontinue use of Anso Comfort capsules, especially if they are using prescription medication. Chlordiazepoxide can add to the effects of alcohol and other central nervous depressants and may be habit-forming.

The product advertising claims that the capsules may be useful in the treatment of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as other illnesses. It suggests that consumers may reduce their need for prescription drugs.  Ms. Bonta emphasized however that "consumers should not reduce or stop their prescribed medicines without talking to their health care providers".  Ms. Bonta added that "it is also crucial that consumers consult with their health care providers when they are taking an herbal product or dietary supplement."

What to do if you are currently taking Anso Comfort capsules

Anso Comfort capsules are clear with dark green powder inside.  The label is yellow with green English printing and a picture of a plant.  The UPC number is 7-63148-58798-6.  The capsules were available from the distributor by mail or telephone order.

Consumers can return the product to NuMeridian, located at 630 W. Duarte Road, No. 204, Arcadia California 91007, or dispose of it safely to prevent exposure to children and pets.
