For many midlife women, perimenopause brings hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, anxiety, and increased irritability. Long used in traditional Chinese medicine, a natural remedy known as magnolia bark is said to help ease certain menopausal symptoms.
It's thought that magnolia bark can offer relief of menopausal symptoms by delivering honokiol (a natural compound known to act as a phytoestrogen). Although research on magnolia bark's effects against menopausal symptoms is fairly limited, there's some evidence that magnolia bark may aid in the treatment of symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, and loss of libido.
Studies suggest that a number of other natural therapies may also help alleviate menopausal symptoms. For instance, black cohosh and red clover may help cool hot flashes, while acupuncture may help improve sleep quality among women going through menopause.
