To help treat cold sores, many people turn to propolis (a resinous substances collected from tree buds by bees). When applied directly to cold sores, propolis is thought to speed up healing of the blisters and help alleviate pain.
Although research on the use of propolis in treatment of cold sores is fairly limited, some studies suggest that propolis may help fight cold sores. For instance, a 2010 study found that propolis contains compounds that could help destroy herpes simplex virus type 1 (the virus that causes cold sores).
A number of other natural remedies may help treat cold sores. For example, the herb lemon balm may help promote healing and--when used regularly--keep cold sores from coming back. In addition, peppermint oil appears to help knock out the herpes simplex virus. There's also some evidence that creams containing resveratrol might help suppress cold sore development.
