Bacopa May Boost Memory

New research shows that the herb bacopa may boost memory in older adults. In ayurveda (the traditional medicine of India), bacopa has long been used as a natural remedy for memory disorders.

For the study, 98 volunteers (age 55 or older) took either 300 mg of bacopa extract or a placebo daily. After 12 weeks, researchers gave memory tests to the 81 participants who completed the trial. Study results showed that bacopa led to significant improvements in the participants' ability to acquire and retain memories.

Past studies in older adults show that bacopa may help lessen depression and ease anxiety (in addition to preserving memory). What's more, findings from test-tube research and animal studies suggest that antioxidants in bacopa may help fight oxidative stress (a destructive process thought to contribute to Alzheimer's disease).
