New research shows that dance-based therapy may benefit seniors looking to enhance their balance and reduce their risk of falling. The study focused on a dance-therapy program called the Lebed Method, which involves low-impact dance steps choreographed to music.
For the study, scientists recruited 11 seniors. Over a two-month period, the study members took part in 18 dance sessions. By the end of the study, the seniors showed improvements in balance, gait, and overall functionality. According to the study's authors, these findings suggest that dance-based therapy may help lower seniors' risk of falling.
In past research, tai chi (a gentle Chinese martial art that combines movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing) has also been found to boost balance and reduce fall risk among older adults.
