Bee Propolis May Keep Athletes From Overheating

Propolis —the resinous substance that bees collect from tree buds—may help shield athletes from heat stress, according to a recent study. In tests on 30 competitive cyclists, researchers found that propolis extract helped save cells from death caused by hyperthermia (a form of heatstroke).

The study's propolis extract contained caffeic acid phenetyl ester (or CAPE), a substance known to offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral effects. The study's authors suggest that CAPE may prevent injury related to exercise-induced hyperthermia, as well as boost athletic performance.

Available in supplement form and found in small quantities in honey, propolis has also been shown to help fight bacteria when applied topically.

I have a question about your write-up on red yeast rice. Was the UCLA study you cite done after 2007 (when the FDA banned lovastatin in red yeast rice products) or after?

thanks very much.

How much Propolis do you take when doing a sport? And do you take before or/and during the activity eg soccer? is there an age limit?

Thank you for your support
