Definition: Myofascial release is a type of bodywork developed by a physical therapist named John Barnes. Practitioners use various techniques such as sustained pressure and stretching to loosen myofascial restrictions, which are tense areas in the muscles and fascia (the thin connective tissue membrane). Myofascial release is used to reduce pain, relieve muscle tension and to increase joint mobility.
