A sitz bath is a bath that involves immersing the pelvis in water. The water is usually warm or it can be warm alternated with cold water (called a “contrast” sitz bath). The warm water is thought to increase blood circulation to the pelvis.
A basin is usually filled with enough warm water that to cover a person’s buttocks and hips so that the water reaches the level of the navel. Some drug stores, hospital pharmacies and medical supply stores also sell plastic sitz tubs that fit over the toilet. A person usually sits in the tub for 10 to 20 minutes.
Sitz baths are used for hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulas, or an episiotomy. They're also used to relieve pain, itching or muscle spasms in the area.
