Question: Where Can I Get Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables?

I just read your article, 5 Remedies for Osteoarthritis Pain. Can you tell me where the avocado/soybean unsaponifiables supplements can be purchased?

- Tanis, Vancouver

Answer: Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables are one of the more promising remedies for osteoarthritis. Four high-quality clinical trials suggest that it may help to improve the pain and stiffness of knee and hip osteoarthritis and reduce the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

It's available as a supplement in some health food stores or online but is difficult to find.

One of the more established brands in North America is called Avosoy. It's marketed and distributed by Jason Theodosakis, MD, the author of The Arthritis Cure (St. Martin's Griffin, 2004). The company web site claims that the products are tested by a third-party lab. Customers can enter their product number to see the lab results for their product.

Although I prefer to rely on Consumerlabs.com for independent testing, they haven't analyzed avocado/soybean unsaponifiables yet, probably because there are so few products currently on the market.
