| Selecting a Homeopathic College | |

- What is the focus of the curriculum? Most schools teach classical homeopathy, which uses a single remedy to balance a person's mental, emotional, and physical characteristics at the time of diagnosis. Many schools, however, include other courses such as combination remedies and flower essences.
- Does the curriculum include classes in anatomy, physiology, and pathology? It is important to understand Western medical pathology so that you can communicate with other health care providers, take necessary precautions when treating complicated disease, and know when to refer to a medical doctor or hospital.
- How much of the curriculum is by distance learning? For some people, distance learning by watching recorded video tapes offers flexibility. However, other people learn better in a classroom setting and enjoy peer discussion. Since many homeopathic programs are taught by distance education, be sure to find out exactly how much of the program is home study.
- Will you have access to a resource library? Homeopathic textbooks are very expensive!
- How extensive is the instructor's training? Homeopathy takes a many years to learn. Find out where he or she studied and for how long. Are the instructors well-known homeopaths?
- How many case studies will there be? Case studies are the best way for most people to learn the homeopathic remedies.
- What are the regulations in your state or province? If you live in a state that licenses naturopathic doctors (who learn homeopathy as part of their training), it may be easier start your practice. Naturopathic doctors are often covered by private health insurance plans.
- Is the college clinic busy? Ask how many patients each student sees in the clinic on average. Remember that you are paying tuition to be in the clinic, so be sure that you will be busy. Some rural colleges may have fewer patients.
- What will your involvement in the clinic be? Will you have a chance to assist with office management and learn practice management skills? How many patients will you be treating and how many will you be observing?
