Selecting a Chiropractic College

by Cathy Wong

  • How diverse are the manipulation techniques taught? Some colleges teach a few core spinal adjustment techniques, while others have a broader perspective and include lower impact techniques.
  • What is the school environment like?  Schools have differing percentages of international students, women, older students, and minority groups. Since some schools tend to have a rather homogeneous student body, if you belong to one of these groups you may be interested in asking about the student body.
  • Does the curriculum include adjunct therapies?  If you are interested in learning more about acupuncture, trigger points, soft tissue manipulation, and other therapies, some schools offer electives or continuing education classes.
  • What are the elective choices? Are there any special programs or classes?  Many chiropractors wish to learn a broader set of skills after they graduate. You can get ahead by starting to explore therapies and conditions you might want to specialize in.  Also, find out if college offers programs to assist with practice management skills, clinic setup, and job placement.
  • How extensive is the library's collection? Ask about the college library collection of textbooks, videotapes, audiotapes, and journals.
  • Is the college clinic busy? Ask how many patients each student sees in the clinic on average.  Remember that you are paying tuition to be in the clinic, so be sure that you will be busy.  Some rural colleges may have fewer patients.
  • What will your involvement in the clinic be? Will you have a chance to assist with office management and learn practice management skills? How many patients will you be treating and how many will you be observing?
