For people undergoing chemotherapy, fish oil may help fight muscle and weight loss. That's the finding of a recent study from the journal Cancer, which included 40 patients receiving chemotherapy as part of their lung cancer treatment.

For the study, 16 patients took fish oil supplements daily while 24 patients received standard care only. After about 10 weeks, members of standard-care group lost an average of five pounds. Members of the fish-oil group, meanwhile, maintained their weight. In addition, 69 percent of patients in the fish-oil group gained or maintained muscle mass, while patients in the standard-care group lost about 2.2 pounds of muscle overall.

Rich in inflammation-fighting omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil may also protect against heart disease and help manage conditions like asthma, arthritis, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
