Looking for a natural way to boost your defense against heart disease? Try eating chocolate. In a new study, researchers found that just one square of chocolate a day could lower your blood pressure and lower your heart disease risk.

For the study, scientists sized up data on 19,357 people (ages 35 to 65) who were followed for at least ten years. Results revealed that study members who reported eating the largest amount of chocolate (an average of 7.5 grams a day) had healthier blood pressure and were 39 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke over the course of the study period (compared to those who ate an average of 1.7 grams of chocolate per day).

It's likely that the antioxidants found in cocoa may play a significant role in chocolate's cardiovascular benefits, according to the study's authors. Past research suggests that other antioxidant-rich substances, such as resveratrol, may also help shield heart health.
