Green Tea May Protect Against Depression

Sipping green tea may be linked to a lower incidence of depressive symptoms, a new study suggests.

For the study, researchers surveyed 1,058 elderly Japanese adults about their green tea consumption. The research team also evaluated the participants' symptoms of depression. In analyzing data on the study members, the scientists found that those who drank four or more cups of green tea each day were 44 percent less likely to have depressive symptoms (compared to those who drank one or fewer cups of green tea daily).

Certain compounds in green tea may offer anti-stress and anti-inflammatory effects, which could in turn curb the development and progression of depressive symptoms, according to the study's authors.

In past research, several other natural substances (including St. John's wort, omega-3 fatty acids, and SAMe) have been found to lessen depressive symptoms. Getting regular exercise, practicing yoga, and following a diet rich in magnesium and B vitamins may also help guard against depression.

A good balanced diet has the potential to protect against depression when coupled with good self-care.

A recurring error in our reasoning as a society is to look for silver bullets that will solve our problems. There are no such silver bullets, unfortunately. This would be true for green tea or anything else.

This is a very interesting article. As a frequent green tea drinker myself, I find that the scientific information being released about green tea only backs up my personal findings.
I’ve experienced a similar pattern with colloidal copper, which is my mineral supplement.

Depression is a complicated issue. Certain tea may help but more research needs to be done. Green tea has been suggested for use in other illnesses and most likely has potential.
