The Inside-Out Diet by Cathy Wong

Tuesday July 17, 2007
I'm pleased to tell you that my book, The Inside-Out Diet: 4 Weeks to Natural Weight Loss, Total Body Health, and Radiance (Wiley, July 2007), is now out in bookstores and online.

This book is for people who want to lose weight, people who've lost weight and are trying to keep it off, or for those who aren't trying to lose weight but just want to eat better and feel healthier.

The Inside-Out Diet tackles the critical role of the liver in weight loss and overall health. If the liver is overburdened by constantly eating the wrong foods (and not enough of the right ones), fad or crash diets, or the increasing level of chemicals in our food and environment, it has to work overtime to detoxify the body and is less able to carry out its other important functions. This leads to hormonal and metabolic imbalances and results in food cravings, weight gain, and a host of other signs such as low energy, mood swings, stress, unhealthy skin, and headaches.

The Inside Out Diet features:
  • Practical information about detoxifying foods that promote optimal liver function and weight loss, including whey protein, flaxseeds, cruciferous veggies (e.g. broccoli and arugula), organic meat and eggs, and much more.
  • Guidelines for getting the full range of antioxidant fruits and vegetables in your diet.
  • New weight loss foods such as shirataki noodles and erythritol.
  • Herbal and green teas that help fight sugar cravings, detox the liver, and are rich in antioxidants. I'm particularly excited about a new herbal tea called honeybush and also provide information about my favorite type of green tea.
  • Food lists and four weeks of meal plans
  • More than 50 delicious recipes created by Maui chef-to-the-stars Sabra Ricci for The Inside-Out Diet
  • Information on 27 herbs and supplements, including hoodia and alpha-lipoic acid
Continue reading the book announcement:

A gentle detox diet, The Inside-Out Diet offers a plan for lasting weight loss that involves three steps:
  • Step 1: Jump-start your detox by temporarily removing the foods that are congesting the liver and colon with fats and toxins
  • Step 2: Check for food intolerances, reintroduce foods gradually, and eat for ongoing weight loss
  • Step 3: Maintain without gain and start a lifetime of healthy, enjoyable eating
As a new mother, maintaining a chemical-free home is important to me, but it should also be a priority for everyone, especially people who struggle with weight loss or poor health. I share some suggestions on how to detox the home that anyone can do. Also included are tips on keeping a food journal, exercise and relaxation.

Although it's a detox diet, The Inside-Out Diet doesn't involve extreme dieting, permanently giving up coffee, meat, wheat, or dairy (you’ll only avoid some of them during the first week, and after that, only if you have a food intolerance) or require fasting or going hungry. It's the friendliest, easiest detox diet around, supporting productive, safe, permanent weight loss—and people can feel the effects as soon as the very first week.

A question for Dr. Wong:
Is it suitable for a Type 2 diabetic who is trying to control blood glucose by diet alone and trying to decrease insulin resistance by daily exercise???
I am attempting to avoid those useless carbs( white sugar, white flour, white poataoes, white pasta, white rice, etc) all of which raise my blood glucose levels. I also try to be an ovo-lacto vegetarian about 75% of the time . Does your inside-out diet fit with whaat I am doing?

You can boost your detox efforts through the use of essential oils like aniseed, lemon, basil, fennel, peppermind. Not only will this help with your cleanse but it will be a treat for your senses that doesn’t involve eating.

Hi Margaret,

The Inside-Out Diet is suitable for someone with type 2 diabetes, although it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before starting any new. The diet emphasizes whole grains, high fiber foods, fresh vegetables, and lean protein, and limits sugar, higher glycemic carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats. It doesn’t involve skipping meals or fasting.

You mentioned that you follow a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet 75% of the time–many of the meal plans and recipes contain chicken, fish, or lean beef. It’s still possible, however, to follow the diet because none of these foods are required. I’ll be posting a sample vegetarian menu plan in the Recipes section of the book website, www.iodiet.com, within the next week.

I wish you all the best!

I’d be afraid to try this because my taste buds would freak out — there wouldn’t be anything good to eat.

Hi Allura,

That was my own concern when I started making healthy changes to my diet fifteen years ago. It was hard at first because I was addicted to junk food, but I soon began to enjoy eating healthy food and more importantly, noticed a significant improvement in the way I felt and looked. It was definitely worth it.
