Comparison of Creatine, HMB and Glutamine Supplements
Tuesday September 30, 2003
Three popular supplements used to enhance muscular strength and mass are creatine (creatine monohydrate), HMB (hydroxy methylbutyrate), and glutamine.
Creatine is produced by the body and found in muscle. It supplies energy for short-term, maximum exercise. Food sources of creatine include meat, poultry, and fish. Glutamine is an amino acid produced by the body. HMB is produced by the body when tissue breaks down, such as during training.
Consumer Labs evaluated 22 products promoted to enhance muscular strength (containing creatine, glutamine or hydroxy methylbutyrate [HMB]). They found:
8 out of 12 creatine products, 4 out of 5 HMB products, and 4 out of 5 glutamine products met review criteria. To read the full report by Consumer Labs, click here.
