A 13-member federal committee was recently nominated to begin reviewing the U.S. dietary guidelines. These guidelines are the foundation of federal nutrition programs and policies and the food guide pyramid. A good thing, right? Consumer groups have doubts.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) wrote a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, calling for the replacement of 7 of the 13 members. They state that these members have major financial and organizational connections to the food, drug, and dietary supplement industries, questioning whether they could provide unbiased information.
